JYJ (known as Junsu/Jaejoong/Yoochun in Japan) is a three member boyband, formed by three members of South Korean boyband TVXQ: Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun and Xiah Junsu. Their debut Japanese language EP The... reached No. 1 on the Japanese Oricon albums chart.[1] The band's global debut album, The Beginning, was released in October 2010.

The group formed following the hiatus of TVXQ.[1] The three members who were to become JYJ filed a lawsuit against their South Korean record label, SM Entertainment, claiming that the 13-year length of their contracts and their earning percentages were unfair. The Seoul Central District Court ruled in their favor on this matter.[2]

The three-membered group was announced in April 2010 by Rhythm Zone.[3] The band performed two rounds of lives, their four-day Thanksgiving Live in Dome concerts in June,[3] and performances at A-Nation in August.[4] The group's debut release, the EP The..., was released in September 2010, and debuted at No. 1 on Oricon albums charts.[1] The DVD for their Thanksgiving Live in Dome concert sold 116,000 copies and their album The... sold 140,000 albums in the first week after being released, with both debuting at No. 1 on the Oricon DVD and album charts in the same week.[5]

The band members also worked on solo pursuits during this time. Xiah released his solo debut single Xiah under the name Xiah Junsu, which reached number two on the Oricon single charts.[6] Hero starred in the drama Sunao ni Narenakute,[7] as well as appearing in a music video for Ayumi Hamasaki's song "Blossom".[8]

In September 2010, Avex Entertainment announced they had decided to suspend all of JYJ's Japanese activities.[2] This was supposedly due to issues the label had with the president of the group's Korean management, C-JeS Entertainment, and his ongoing trial for links with organized crime.[2]

The group was scheduled to release their English-language global debut album, The Beginning, on October 12, led by the Kanye West produced single "Ayyy Girl."[9] They also toured in October and November, with dates in South Korea, South East Asia and the United States.[10] The tickets to the two performances at the 11,000 seat Hwaseong Tiger Dome at Korea University sold out in 15 minutes and a portion of the profits would be donated to World Vision.[11][12] Two weeks before the release of the album, 50,000 copies of the regular edition had been pre-ordered and pre-sales for the 99,999-copies of the special edition of The Beginning reached numbers of 400,000 requests.[11][13]

Despite visa issues almost causing the cancellation of their US tour, JYJ decided to continue with the tour and perform free concerts for their fans. 6,400 fans showed up at the New York show, including 3,400 that made it into the theater for the concert and an extra 3,000 that waited outside for JYJ to come back out.[14]

They had their first public broadcast performance in South Korea on December 31, 2010 at the 2010 KBS Drama Awards. They sung “Found You” – a ballad track from the drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal which starred Yoochun.[15]

JYJ released their extended play, “Their Rooms, Our Story” on January 25, 2011. Which even without promotions went on to become a weekly best seller on Hanteo!

As of 2011, JYJ is on tour visiting several countries such as Thailand, China, the United States of America, Taiwan, and hope to end their tour in their homeland South Korea. [16]
